Counseling Philosophy
I'm sure you heard the saying " You've got one life", but have you thought about how you would like to live that life? At times, we can experience struggles that can move us out of our window of tolerance or leave us feeling like we have no options or means of relief. My role is to support you on your journey of self-exploration and self- awareness to dismantle unproductive narratives that are no longer serving you, as well as assisting with developing coping interventions for lasting change. I embody a nonjudgmental, unconditional positive regard approach that meets you where you are at, and is free of judgement. I have experience working with individuals who have experienced trauma, incarceration, substance abuse, issues with emotional regulation, stage of life concerns, anxiety and depression. Let's vibe, heal, and learn together!!! I am looking forward to meeting you!

Counseling Philosophy
"Do what you can, with what you have, where you are" Theodore Roosevelt. Sometimes life is hard and sometimes we are too hard on ourselves. As a former community college student, myself, I understand the difficulties that can come with learning how to manage adulthood and succeed in school. This is why I believe it is important to remember that sometimes we can only do what we can, with what we have in that moment. My goal during our time together is that you feel supported and gain skills to learn how to manage life's ups and downs. Together you will learn how to use coping skills and grow in your strengths.
I understand that all areas of life effect mental health, this is why I use a holistic approach with my clients to ensure that your needs are being met. I will provide you with psychoeducation so you understand all we do together. I have a big toolbox of skills that I cannot wait to share with you.

Health Care has the power to add Years to the Life you are living. Mental health Care has the power to add Quality of Life to the years you are living. I see my role in mental health care as helping and journeying with students to what is hindering them from being what they want to be. I am a child of Chinese immigrants and love learning about your family of origin. I specialize in working with the following topics: ADHD, Social Anxiety, Addictions, and Trauma. I am trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) a modality that focuses on helping work through traumatic memories and experiences. Ellie McDowell, Social Worker, LSW
Philosophy
As a social worker, I advocate and collaborate with individuals to ensure that their basic needs are being met by connecting them with on campus and external resources. My goal is to meet students where they are at and to empower them in a variety of ways in reaching their personal goals. As a social worker, I have the unique opportunity to be creative in the ways I support students while treating each individual with dignity and as an expert of their own lives. I also have the opportunity to network and seek out new partnerships with outside organizations to meet needs as they arise. I seek to approach students from a trauma-informed lens and creating a space that welcomes vulnerabilities and honest conversations. An additional part of my role is supporting students in gaining access to our campus Food Cupboard. This is a campus resource for all students to utilize as a supplement for their food needs.
Education
St. Catherine University, Master of Social Work (In Progress)
Bethel University, Bachelor of Social Work

Aaron Ostler, Mental Health Therapist Intern
Internship Overview
I approach counseling from an existential and client centered perspective. This approach assumes that there is not a single correct path for any given person. Instead, I focus on addressing the unique strengths and difficulties encountered on a client by client basis . We then explore various therapeutic modalities to find a path that truly resonates. I am particularly passionate about exploring the topics of anxiety, depression, disassociation, mood disorders, life transitions, relational problems, and identity development. My background is in working with individuals who experience serious and persistent mental illness. I have been privileged to witness the substantial impact that various therapeutic interventions can have. I have received training in motivational interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy skills. I also utilize concepts from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Emotion Focused Therapy, and various Mindfulness Practices.
