Our career advisors have innovative tools to help you identify your academic interests, personal strengths, and unique attributes.
Getting Started
Access the various resources below to increase your career knowledge. Consider taking the FOCUS 2 self-survey to identify careers based upon your unique attributes. Schedule with a career advisor to discuss your career matches, explore degree pathways to fit your goals, and create an action plan.
FOCUS 2 Career is a 30-minute self-survey that asks you questions about your personality, skills, and interests, then matches you with compatible careers fields and occupations. Schedule an appointment with a career advisor to discuss your results and make an exploration action plan.
To complete the FOCUS 2 Career self-survey from this link, click the red button “Create An Account” and use “NHCC” as the passcode. Save occupations that interest you to discuss at your FOCUS appointment.
NHCC offers free access to What Can I Do With This?, which features 100 degree and major profiles with information on common career paths, types of employers that hire in the field, and strategies to maximize opportunities. At the bottom of each category, find links to professional associations, occupational outlook information, and job search resources.
Hosted by the U.S. Department of Labor from national data, O*Net OnLine is a user-friendly website full of timely career information, searchable by personal interests, abilities, and hot technologies. Find local and national wage trends, along with bright outlook occupational forecasts.
Also known as an ‘informational interview,’ a career conversation is a formal or informal question and answer session with an industry professional who is working in an area of interest to you. It is an effective research tool (not a job interview), but it’s best to conduct after you have done preliminary research (try O*Net OnLine and What Can I Do With This Major?). Seek to understand the work environment, skills, and degree requirements needed.
Job shadowing is a great opportunity to observe a ‘day in the life’ of a professional. However, not all employers offer this option. Consider requesting a tour and a career conversation instead.
Schedule a career appointment to learn more about arranging and preparing for an informational interview or job shadow opportunity with an industry professional.
This Career Guidebook is a great tool to explore CTE career fields and degree options to select the right pathway for you.
